It’s hit the newstands – Time Magazine featuring a Pussy Hat – a symbol created for the Women’s Movement by a knitter.
I admit, we weren’t thrilled with the idea of pussy hats at first. A symbol that reinforces the vulgar narrative exposed during the campaign didn’t feel right. But – and this is a big but – as we saw the outpouring of people – of all ages and gender – embracing the idea, we were able to look past the words and see the Movement. Personally, I support the Movement and I marched in Washington – I don’t make a secret of that. But, please understand that I respect your right to disagree and welcome you regardless of your position. nancy O was conceived as a place where all kinds of people can gather and connect, and we welcome everyone here.
So, about the hats! When I got off the bus in Washington two weeks ago and approached the Mall, I began to feel an immense sense of pride. First, I’m always blown away by our Nation’s Capitol. I felt pride that we as women could pull off this immense and peaceful March. But strangely, I was also proud that a Knitter designed a hat, posted it on Ravelry, and created a symbol that spread like wildfire, landing right on the cover of Time Magazine. Whatever your politics – that’s pretty darn cool!
Peace and love to all,
